TNA Genesis 2005 Preview
Let's be honest here. Does anybody actually want to buy this ppv for the matches they have lined up? Does anybody actually know more than 3 of them without looking them up? No. By all accounts this is TNA ppv Generico. No major storyline developments expected. Only one title on the line. And a few of the TNA generic match listing favorites.
No. Tonight's ppv is memorable for one reason only: Christian (spoiler). Yep. The guy we all know and love. The guy WWE refused to believe was actually over with the fans. The guy who WWE lowballed during contract negotiations. The guy who could become one of the biggest named in professional wrestling.
Let's take a look at the ppv.
The Naturals & Lance Hoyt vs. Diamonds in the Rough
Most likely on the pre-show. Isn't Chase Stevens out with a broken neck? Diamonds in the Rough, for those who forgot or didn't even know, are TNA mainstays Simon Diamond, David Young and Elix Skipper. Yep, Elix giving TNA some of its best highlight reels ever is rewarded by being put in a jobber heel stable while his former tag team partner, Christopher Daniels, gets a major angle or 2.
Prediction: Lots of "Hoyt" chants. He'll probably pin David Young for the win.
Nigel McGuiness vs. Shark Boy
NIGEL! ROH's Pure Wrestling champion gets a TNA tryout match tonight which will probably also be on the pre-show. If there is any wrestler in the indies today who could benefit from the 6-sided ring it is Nigel. His European style with lots of rolls and slow, psychology-driven approach is best suited for what is essentially a rounded match area. For his sake I'm hoping he does well. I don't see too many people who are a good fit for his style in the company but damn it if he doesn't deserve a chance.
Winner: Nigel McGuiness
3 Live Kru vs. Bobby Roode & Eric Young & A-1 - Hockey Sticks Legal Match w/ Kip James as special guest referee
How do you make a match with a special guest referee even more ridiculous? Make hockey sticks legal. Team Canada has more than run its course. Let it end already and let these guys show what they can really bring to the table. Will 3LK be DQed if Konnan throws his shoe? This isn't a Throwing Shoes is Legal match...
Prediction: Will they please have B James turn on 3LK and team with Kip James already? The Outlaws could do a lot to bring back some of the Monday Night Wars audience who are turned off by WWE's current product. So just do it already. As for the match, I don't care. This is the TNA Midcard Tag Match of this ppv.
Jeff Hardy vs. Monty Brown - Contenders Match
And this is the (upper?) midcarders who aren't even feuding match of the ppv. Presumeably this sets up the winner for a title shot against NWA World Champion Jeff Jarrett. But it's a "Contenders Match". Not a "#1 Contender Match". Monty has been slow-building a rivalry between himself and the champ lately so we know who should win this match.
Prediction: Could go either way.
Samoa Joe & Christopher Daniels & Alex Shelley & Roderick Strong vs. Matt Bentley & Austin Aries & Sonjay Dutt & Chris Sabin - Survival X match
A Survival X match is like the WWE's Survivor Series match - but with X-Division workers only! This match fulfills the multi-person X-Division match of the night. Joe and Daniels have a rivalry building up. Will it result in a new tag team or a singles feud? And did you notice that there are 5 Ring of Honor workers in this match? And that 4 of them comprise the heel team?
Prediction: TNA raids ROH of more workers. Oh -- and the Joe/Daniels rivalry costs Team ROH the match.
Sabu vs. Abyss - No DQ
This match fulfills the freak.monster match of the night. This one will be ugly. Hopefully Sabu wraps his arm in bared wire again so Abyss can get himself counted out.
Prediction: Blood.
Raven vs Opponent of Larry Zbysko's Choosing
Could this be where Christian debuts? Let me take a look at the roster on their website... Who isn't getting used? We've got Apolo, Raven's lackey Cassidy Reilly, Jerelle Clark, Johnny Devine, Johnny Fairplay, Kevin Nash (it isn't him), Sean Waltman, Shocker and Sonny Siaki. If this isn't where Christian debuts fans will NOT be happy.
Prediction: Unhappy fans as Raven defeats Sonny Siaki.
A.J. Styles(c) vs. Petey Williams - X-Division Championship
Oh please, please, please keep Scott D'Amore out of this match. Off tv as well. If this match is meant to make the fans happy then just let them wrestle one on one. Again: Team Canada has run its course. End it!
Prediction: Lot's of "This is Awesome" chants as AJ poses for the crowd after doing a kick. Also it will be the perceived MOTN. AJ retains.
Team 3-D & Rhino vs. Jeff Jarrett & AMW
And now we have TNA Main Event C: The 6 man tag. People who made their names in ECW versus those synonymous with TNA. Rhino is still filling in for Kevin Nash it seems. The Deadlies are going to get revenge on all the people they heard were at the mock funeral -- because they couldn't watch it on tv. They had to hear about it. Oy... How are they blowing their money feud? And so early too? Meh...
Prediction: TNA cheats to win.
